Betfair Stanley Cup favorites Pittsburgh Penguins were beaten on New Year’s Eve  2-1 by the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center.

Their poor record in New Jersey continues as goals from Adam Henrique and Michael Ryder for the hosts inflicted defeat on the Eastern Conference leaders.

The Devils also had Martin Brodeur to thank for the win as he stopped 19 shots  as the home side held on for their two straight win.

It is New Jersey’s second victory of the season over Pittsburgh in the Prudential Center. They have also been successful in 11 of their last 13 meetings there against many Betfair punters’ selection to win the Stanley Cup later in the year.

Matt Niskanen grabbed the visitor’s lone  goal in the second period of the game which at the time tied the game up. However, they were unable to get past Brodeur again. He produced a glove-save off James Neal’s shot in the third period, while later in the clash, he kept the Penguins out with a chest save from another Neal attempt.

Following the victory, the Devils are 17-16-8 for the campaign. They sit fourth in the Metropolitan standings below Pittsburgh, Washington and Philadelphia. The New Jersey side will have the opportunity to improve on that though when they travel to Chicago on Saturday to face the Blackhawks. They will go into that game as the outsides with Betfair as the Central Division team are top of their respective standings with a record of 28-7-7.

Chicago are the market leaders in the Western Conference after a strong start to their campaign. They beat the Los Angeles Kings in their last outing 1-0 in a low scoring game at the United Center.
