1. First Openly Gay Athlete– As Lebron James said after winning his first NBA Championship last year, “it’s about damn time.” That’s what I and I’m sure many people thought when they woke up to the news yesterday that 12-year NBA journeyman Jason Collins came out yesterday, saying that he felt it was time for someone to step forward. This came as a surprise to many, even his twin brother Jarron Collins, largely because Jason had dated several women before, and had even been engaged. However, Collins said that he was just trying to cover up what he already knew, that he was gay. We here at sportsinvasion join much of the rest of the nation in voicing our support for Collins, and admire his bravery. Here’s hoping it leads to several more athletes coming out, and leading to a time where a players sexual orientation doesn’t even matter.
2. Newspaper Nails Te’o- By now, everyone know about the whole Manti Te’o fake girlfriend bizarre story that broke early this year. Well, it’s pretty clear that now that Te’o has entered the NFL, we won’t be forgetting about it anytime soon. Te’o will be have to be prepared to be constantly bombarded with insults and jabs not only from fellow NFL players, but also from media and fans alike, including his new team’s media apparently. Check out the cartoon published by the U-T San Diego, the city’s primary newspaper.
