Yesterday, we were reminded why we are so upset whenever Lebron James, pound for pound the best athlete in the NBA right now, says he will not be in the Slam Dunk Contest. James entertained the crowd during pregame warmups with a dunk that would have gotten a 55 out of 50.  And he makes it look so effortless. Enjoy the amazing footage below.

Seeing this dunk gave me an idea. I’m writing an open letter to Adam Silver, the man who is due to take over for David Stern as NBA Commissioner in the beginning of February 2014, just two weeks before All Star Weekend. The Dunk Contest is quickly fading in popularity again, and is in desperate need of a face lift. Classic dunk contests pitted the likes of Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, and little Spud Webb against each other, yet we are forced to watch athlete after athlete miss dunk after dunk, in a floundering attempt to bring excitement to what was once a great event.

So here’s what you do Adam. Get the best athletes in the game (Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook to name a few) together, sit them down, and work out something for next year’s contest.  Pay these athletes whatever they want. Their yearly salary would be a good place to start I think. Have these guys take over the night. Imagine the ratings: Lebron and Durantala head to head. Blake Griffin jumping over half the West All Star Team.  It would be the grandest sports spectacle of the year, outside of that Super Bowl game.

Blake-Griffin-Dunk

David Stern, by default, has become the most beloved Commissioner of the Main four sports.  There will be giant shoes to fill once he leaves the game. What better way to kick off what will hopefully be a long stay as NBA Commissioner then by giving every NBA fan and player what they want.  Find a way to rejuvenate what should be a highly anticipated event that has now turned into an unfortunate necessity. Get the best dunkers in the game in the contest and find out who’s the best!

What do you guys think of this plan? Should stars like Lebron James be forced to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest? Let us know what you think in the comments!
