Another week goes by, and the Big-10 lose another undefeated team. Last week, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Ohio State were all 4-0, and only two of them made it out alive. The unfortunate team was Minnesota, who lost 31-13 to a bad Iowa team. I was expecting them to hold on and maybe crack the Top 25, but alas, the Hawkeyes got the victory.
Northwestern has come out of nowhere to start the season 5-0 and have jumped up to #24 in the nation. Their last win came at home against Indiana 44-29, and they have two winnable games before a matchup with #21 Nebraska later this month. Lastly, #12 Ohio State stayed perfect by edging out a 17-16 win over Michigan State. Don’t look now, but the Buckeyes are undefeated and only have one more ranked team on their schedule. The idea of an undefeated season with a #1 AP ranking may not be as far fetched as originally thought.
After starting the season 0-2, the Penn State Nittany Lions have riled off three wins a row, the latest being a 35-7 win at Illinois. To start this year, this season looked destined for failure. Now, a winning season is not out of the question. Nebraska and Wisconsin battled it out on Saturday, and the Cornhuskers battled back from a 14-3 1st quarter deficit to win 30-27. Nebraska has fought back well from their loss to UCLA, and they are battling to get back in the Top 20.
Lastly, Purdue crushed Marshall 51-41 in the lone non-conference matchup. The Boilermakers are 3-1 to start the year, but have no quality wins, and with Michigan and Wisconsin coming up, they figured to be back to .500 fairly soon. And rounding it out, Michigan was idle this week, giving them some time to think about the Notre Dame loss. Here’s a look at this week’s matchups, with Iowa and Minnesota being idle.
#21 Nebraska at #12 Ohio State- This is the matchup of the week. We mentioned earlier that Ohio State has one ranked matchup left, and this is that game. They will welcome the Cornhuskers to the Horseshoe, and I like Ohio State to get this win. I’m not convinced that Nebraska is a top 25 team, and I like Ohio State in this matchup.
Ohio State has a tough battle of it, but I like them to win 31-21.
#24 Northwestern at Penn State- Well how will the Wildcats deal with being favorites. We will find out this weekend, as they have a battered but experienced Penn State team. I like this Wildcat team, and I think they have the talent to knock off Penn State this week.
Northwestern wins 24-20.
With the other matchups, I like Michigan State to beat up Indiana, Michigan to knock off Purdue, and Wisconsin to handle Illinois.
Lastly, check out our favorite play from the Big-10 this past weekend. It comes from Michigan State freshman WR Keith Mumphrey, who put forth an incredible effort to put his team up in the 3rd quarter.
We hope you enjoyed our look at the Big-10 this weekend! What do you think of Ohio State’s chances to make it to the top of the AP Poll? Let us know in the comments!
