Well I wasn’t expecting that yesterday.  Imagine this. A rookie QB, who came out of nowhere his senior year and put up absurd numbers against the Big-12 on a down year, going #2 overall in the draft. All the pressure on this kid, and you throw him into the Superdome, against the New Orleans Saints, where even the greatest QB’s have faltered. And what does he do: he goes 19-26 320 yds 2 TD’s. Not too shabby.  More improbably, he led the lowly Redskins, who were bad enough to get him in the draft, and they beat the Saints, who went 13-3 last year, including a 9-0 record at home with the playoff victory, and they BEAT them 40-32.  Here is the play that sparked the Skins, an 88 yard TD pass to Pierre Garcon.

Now, I’m hesitant to crown RG3 the next big thing in football. I was the same last year with Cam Newton, and he went on to have one of the best rookie seasons ever. Will we see the same from RG3? I think we will. What impressed me most about Griffin yesterday was his poise in the pocket, and the time he took to get his reads. So often, rookie QB’s think they need to get the ball out to their first read in three seconds, and it causes mistakes. Griffin made no mistakes. Now, also consider that it was against the Saints defense, which even during their Super Bowl year, has never been too scary. And without Vilma yesterday, they looked lost at times. But I’m not about to take anything away from RG3. He played like a man yesterday, and he certainly impressed this writer. It seems like he has a great head on his shoulders, so I hope h’es able to keep it up.

What did you think of RG3’s performance? Is he going to win the Rookie of the Year? Let us know in the comments!
