Ricky Williams had it all. He had a Heisman Trophy under his belt for his college playing days at Texas. He was part of the biggest draft day trade ever when Mike Ditka, coach of the Saints at the time, traded his whole draft to get Williams, then took the rest of the day off. He was traded to Miami, where he had a reemergence, becoming one of the NFL’s most feared rushers. Then, all of a sudden, he retired. After failing several drug tests, Williams needed a break from the NFL, and walk away while in the prime of his career. This, is the story of Ricky Williams
The film follows Williams after he retired from the NFL in 2004 in the prime of his career. Williams was in search of a new meaning to life, and had lost all desire to play football. However, due to the amount of drugs tests Williams failed, many saw it as a lazy move by a stoner. This was not the case however. As the movie so greatly puts it, “The masses brought the splif myth, that Ricky retired exclusively to get high, when in reality he walked away to heal a damaged body and feed a searching mind.”
Run Ricky Run also brings to light the way Williams was raised in a violate house. His mother was working and going to school, and had little time to care for Williams, while his dad was a suspected sexual defiant. Williams accused his father of being sexually deviant, and his father became a registered sex offender. This fueled a mind that has evolved to being one of mostly genius, but occasional insanity.
The film does a great job of presenting two completely different sides of Ricky Williams: one is the nice, misunderstood guy who has struggled to battle with the demons on and off the field. The other is the absolute villain that the media created, making him seem to be a hateable character who was precieved to be the team cancer that Terrell Owens and Randy Moss actually were. This could not be further from the truth, and this film does a great job of making this distinction clear.
The movie shows the most personal of moments for Williams, from his sessions of smoking marijuana, to his beach wedding in 2009. The movie flows very well, and does a great job of showing all aspects of this complex character. The film gives a great insight to a misunderstood person, whose only crime was that he was different from everyone else.
We give Run Ricky Run 4 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend it as one of the best films in the series.
